Famous "Sticky Soup" Noodles with Stewed Pork and Crispy Pork Belly

by Kolun.h, Bangkok, Thailand

Kolun.h is a humble shophouse restaurant in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon neighborhood serving up Hainanese-style rice noodles since 1997. The beloved shop is renowned for its flavorful meals and affordable prices, even gaining the attention of the Michelin Guide.

I stopped in one afternoon while exploring Old Town for one of the best bowls of pork noodles I've ever had.

The shop's classic noodles are wide, silky, and chewy, and are served in your choice of a light, peppery clear soup or a rich, thickened broth. I chose the second option, the "sticky soup", which added some heartiness and richness to the noodles.

The noodles that I chose were topped with large pieces of braised pork that melted in the mouth and some of the best pork belly that I've ever had. Sometimes pork belly can be too fatty, but this was just right and had a perfect crispy skin.

The bowl was topped with plenty of aromatics like fried shallots, fresh green onion, pickled mustard greens, and sesame seeds, which all added a unique flavor to the already rich broth.

Despite its modest shophouse setting, the restaurant attracts long queues at lunchtime for its hearty bowls, affordable prices, and straightforward, efficient service
