Smoked Duck Noodle Soup
by Phet Op Chan Oi, Bangkok, Thailand
I was recently taking a walk from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong Station through the city's expansive Chinatown, when it suddenly started to rain. Now, this wasn't just a light sprinkle, but a full-blown monsoon storm. I was forced to run inside the first shelter I could find, and that turned out to be a little family-run restaurant called Phet Op Chan Oi, which ended up serving me one of the absolute best bowls of noodles I've ever had in my life.

The noodles themselves were a traditional thin bami-style noodle and were served in a savory pork broth along with pork wontons, slices of kale, and chopped green onion. The noodle soup itself was very good, but what set it apart was the meat.
I've had a lot of noodles in Thailand. Many of them have been delicious, and many of them have been served with duck meat. However, until recently, I had never had Thai noodle soup served with slices of smoked duck meat! The meat was succulent with a perfect toothsome texture and had an incredible smoky flavor that reminded me of the smoked turkey I love from barbecue joints back home in Texas.
If you happen to be in Chinatown, don't pass by this unassuming little shop. If you stop in for a bowl of noodles, you'll definitely be in for a treat of a hidden gem.

Menu
The restaurant's menu is available in Thai, English, and Chinese, and prices are standard for Bangkok, with dishes ranging from 60-70 baht. The smoked duck noodles (70 baht) are the shop's specialty, and what I would recommend for a first-time visitor.
