Khao Moo Daeng, or Thai Red Pork in Ari, Bangkok

Red Pork and Crispy Pork on Rice

by Thanee Khao Moo Daeng Roasted & Bbq Pork Rice, Bangkok, Thailand

Thanee Restaurant in Bangkok's trendy Ari neighborhood has been around for more than 50 years, and claims to serve the best khao moo dang in the city! It's a classic red pork restaurant, with thick cuts of barbecued pork and crackly crispy pork hanging on hooks in the window. With such great-looking food and an English menu, Thanee is inviting for a hungry guy out exploring the city.

Khao moo dang is a classic barbecue dish which means "red pork". I ordered a mixed plate which comes with a serving of red pork and a serving of crispy pork covered in the restaurant's famous khao moo dang red bbq sauce.

The red pork was thin-cut and tender with a sweet and smoky flavor from the slow-cooking Thai-style barbecue. The crispy pork was perfectly crispy, with a crackly fried skin and a soft, tender meat. The dish was smothered in the restaurant's famous moo dang sauce, a rich and sweet sauce made from Chinese five spice. The dish evolved from a Chinese pork dish, but is now one of the most popular Thai flavors.

Every dish at Thanee comes with a stewed boiled egg and sliced cucumber. If you want a little sour flavor to cut through the sweet red pork sauce, use some of the pickled chilies in vinegar (not spicy) to add to your dish. It's a traditional way to serve khao moo daeng, and while I did not use this condiment, it can add a really nice flavor.

All dishes (unless you want to order a full-sized plate of red pork or crispy pork to share) cost 60 baht, a super reasonable price for the large portion. Drinks, including Thai tea, juice, or even o-liang coffee cost 20 baht. Bottled water is 10 baht.

I recommend ordering #4, which comes with a serving of red pork and crispy pork. That's what I got, because I just couldn't decide between the two! #1, which also adds a side of red Chinese sausage is also a good option.

The restaurant has plenty of seating area, and is air-conditioned.
