Espresso Sunrise at the Silver Temple, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Espresso Sunrise (Coffee and Orange Juice)

at the Silver Cafe, Chaing Mai, Thailand

One of my favorite coffee drinks is the espresso sunrise (or "cafe som" in Thai), a drink made of half coffee and half fresh-squeezed orange juice that has been very popular in Thailand the past few months. It's a refreshing way to start the morning! I was recently traveling in Chiang Mai and had a sunrise at a really unique cafe on the grounds of the legendary Silver Temple.

The coffee, costing a reasonable 60 thb (about $2) per glass, is strong and delicious, and guaranteed to wake you up if you are feeling sleepy! Sweetened with fresh orange juice rather than with sugar or the traditional Thai sweetened condensed milk, this is a healthier option than most Thai coffees, which tend to be overly sweet.

What makes the drink special, though, is where it's served. The Silver Cafe is a coffee shop and silver shop on the grounds of Wat Sri Suphan, the Silver Temple in Chiang Mai. A traditional local artisan silver craft shop is located out back, and guests can buy genuine local silver crafts in the shop as they enjoy their coffee.

Traveler's Tips

Wat Sri Suphan, or the Silver Temple, is one of the most beautiful and unique Lanna-style (northern Thai) Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This temple is totally unique in all of Thailand.

Chiang Mai was historically known for its silver. Today, you can still see remnants of this ancient silver working craft amongst the Hill Tribes and with artisans who seek to preserve the traditional handicraft. The community at and around Wat Sri Suphan works hard to preserve northern silversmithing.

Despite the beauty of the main ordination hall, that's not what draws visitors to Wat Sri Suphan, but rather the very structure that gives the temple its English name that puts this historic temple on the map: the Silver Temple. Also known as the "Silver Sanctuary", this elegant temple hall was dedicated on the 720th anniversary of Chiang Mai in 2016.

Covered inside and outside in silver, the fine details are stunning. It's impossible to notice everything, and the closer you look at the detailed inlay, the more you see.
