Peking duck is a personal favorite dish of mine. This is a rich and delicate Chinese dish made from the thin skin of a five-day roast duck wrapped in a super thin Chinese pancake along with a sliver of cucumber and green onion and dipped in a sweet and savory sauce. Dating back to the Imperial era of China, this dish has a history going back as far as the early 14th century!

Peking duck is a traditional Chinese dish made from the super thin and very crispy skin of a duck flavored with wǔxiāng fěn, or Chinese five-spice (a seasoning traditionally incorporating the major flavor profiles of sweet, savory, bitter, sour, and salty) made from star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, Sichuan pepper. and fennel seeds. The duck skin is served with a paper-thin Chinese pancake and a dipping sauce made from sweet beans and other savory Chinese flavors.

Because Peking duck is made using only the super crispy skin of the duck, you can also request the leftover meat from the dish to be cooked to your specifications. There are several options, but we decided to try their famous minced duck meat with herbs served with a huge plate of lettuce. You can make a sort of wrap using a large crispy leaf of the lettuce wrapped around the meat and dipped into the sauce.

The restaurant also provides unlimited Chinese iced tea!

It's a very filling meal and the portions are huge. It would be great for a party or large group of people, but you can always take the leftovers home for the next day.

Menu and Price

An order of Peking duck alone costs 470 baht, but for just 80 baht more you can request the meat from the duck to be cooked to your specifications. We decided to order the restaurant's famous minced duck with lettuce, which was excellent. It's worth paying a little extra for a lot more food (and if the portions are too big, which they probably will be, you can always take the leftovers home for lunch the next day!).

What Ramruay Pochana is really famous for, however, is their legendary "guitar duck".

Location

Ramruay Pochana is located in Rama III neighborhood at Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra 26 Alley, Chong Nonsi, Yan Nawa, Bangkok 10120. It's not located super close to any public transport line, so the best way to get there is to drive or take a taxi from Si Lom or Sathorn. The restaurant is across the street from Central Plaza Rama III shopping mall.

From the outside the restaurant doesn't look like much. In fact, you might even miss it at first because it feels more like walking into a parking lot or garage than a restaurant! The inside is plain and simple, but that's because their food is so good, they don't need to make it fancy. The taste speaks for itself! It's a very traditional and old-fashioned Thai-Chinese restaurant with a long history and a dedicated fan base.
