Bua Loi, or Floating Lotus - traditional Thai dessert in Bangkok

Bua Loi, or Floating Lotus

by Bua Loi Khlong San, Bangkok, Thailand

Bua loi is a traditional Thai dessert dating back to the late 1600s. The dessert is made from balls of rice flour dyed with natural colors and cooked in a mixture of coconut milk and sugar. The result is a dessert that is warm, sweet, and salty.

I visited Bua Loi Khlong San, an old-fashioned Thai dessert shop specializing in very traditional bowl of bua loi. The family-run shop has been open for generations and is quite famous in Bangkok's Khlong San neighborhood.

Video Review

Small balls of glutenous rice flour are dyed with natural colorings such as beetroot for the pink ones, butterfly pea for the purple ones, and pumpkin for the yellow ones. Bua Loi Khlong San also includes pieces of crunchy sweet corn, small cubes of taro root, gingko seeds, and small pieces of coconut to add more texture and flavor to their legendary bua loi.

The dessert is served warm, and the sweet flavors of the coconut milk make each bite thick, creamy, and delicious. It's a pretty rich dessert, and the small portion is plenty filling in my opinion.

You can also order Bua Loi Khlong San's signature bua loi, which includes a salted egg yolk (which can give the dessert a richer, saltier flavor and a slightly gritty texture) and a soft-boiled egg which adds additional richness.

I personally preferred the bua loi without any egg, but it's very common and maybe more traditional to include at least one type of egg in your bua loi.

The menu is simple: there are just four options.

You can order a bowl of bua loi with a salted egg yolk, a soft-boiled egg, both, or neither.

Prices range from 30 baht for a bowl of plain bua loi to 55 baht with both the salted egg and soft-boiled egg. It's a super cheap dessert!
