at Or Tor Kor Market Food Court, Bangkok, Thailand

Khao Kha Moo is a popular Thai dish where a braised or stewed pork leg is served over rice. The pork leg is cooked until tender in a flavorful broth, usually made with soy sauce, garlic, cinnamon, star anise, and other spices (often a Chinese-style five spice blend). The dish is typically served with a side of pickled mustard greens and a boiled egg which is also stewed in the five spice broth.

I ordered a plate of khao kha moo at the Or Tor Kor Market (Marketing Organization for Farmers) in Bangkok, Thailand).

Considered a sort of Thai comfort dish, khao kha moo is a rich, fatty, and delectable dish. The meat is so soft and tender (due to the long hours braising in a huge pot of broth) that is simply melts away at first bite. The pork leg is rich, sweet, and delightfully spiced.

A big serving of white rice is topped with a generous portion of soft and juicy pork and served alongside the traditional boiled egg. The five spice egg, which has been boiled in the broth alongside the pork meat, absorbs all of the rich Chinese spices and takes on a wonderful sweet flavor.

The dish is served with a side of slightly sour pickled mustard greens and a sour and spicy sauce which cuts through some of the sweetness of the meat to bring out the full complexity of the dish's flavors.

Price

A plate of khao kha moo served with rice costs 80 baht. The portion size is large, and the price is reasonable.

Location

Or Tor Kor Market, also called the Marketing Organization for Farmers, is one of my favorite markets in Bangkok. This massive farmers market is well organized, clean and hygienic, and is one of the best places to find the freshest produce, ingredients, and meat in the city. You can even find lots of things here that are more regional and often harder to find in Bangkok.

Prices here are a little higher than at other more local markets, but the high quality of the produce makes up for it.

Or Tor Kor Market is located at 101 Kamphaeng Phet Rd, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900 at MRT Kamphaeng Phet Station, and is located just across the street from the legendary Chatuchak Weekend Market (JJ Market). If you're feeling adventurous, you can definitely visit both on the same day.
