As if American Fried Rice couldn't get any wilder!

I've written about American fried rice before on this blog. Despite its name, it is very much a Thai dish, and the legend goes that its origins date back over half a century to the Vietnam War when American servicemen would be sent to Thailand for R&R. Enterprising Thai restauranteurs wanted to create a dish that the Americans would enjoy and came up with a fried rice dish utilizing all sorts of "American" ingredients: sliced hot dog, ketchup, raisins, fried eggs, and more.

Lucky's Hungry American Fried Rice in Bangkok's Ari neighborhood takes the dish to the next level, elevating this strange street food dish which I rarely order to something truly magnificent. The restaurant goes all-in on premium ingredients, big portions, and innovative flavor combinations, and I am especially a fan of their spicy "hell chicken AFR".

I was in Ari the other day and decided to have lunch at Lucky's Hungry. This time, I wanted to try the "Surf N Turf AFR".

Not long after ordering, lunch arrived!

My dish started with a huge serving of classic American fried rice made with raisins and tossed in ketchup for a sweet and savory taste and the dish's iconic red color. The rice was topped with a slice of fried ham, a piece of bacon, a fried egg with a perfectly runny yolk, and two big pieces of breaded and deep-fried fish. It was served with a wedge of lemon and a cup of tartar sauce for flavor.

Fish, bacon, ham, and fried rice with ketchup may sound like a strange combo... but since when isn't anything about American fried rice strange? That's part of the charm of the dish, especially at Lucky's Hungry, and I loved every bite of my meal. The unexpected flavor combinations ended up creating a beautiful fusion-style dish, and the soft, flaky fried fish paired very nicely with the bacon and ham. Highly recommended!

My wife ordered one of the fried chicken combo sets (Set C on the menu), which came with two spicy chicken wings topped in crispy chili and one deep fried chicken breaded with crispy pieces of corn for more crunch and texture. The chicken inside was very juicy and tender, and the combination came together really well. The set was served with a side of corn ribs and a honey mustard dipping sauce.

Needless to say, just these two dishes were more than enough food for the two of us, and we had trouble finishing our meals. They are definitely generous with portion sizes at Lucky's Hungry!

The restaurant has a breakfast menu as well, which I'd very much like to try. It looks like I'll be paying them another visit sometime in the near future.
