Fruity Ramen

While exploring Taipei's vibrant shopping neighborhood of Ximending, a small restaurant tucked away down a quiet alleyway caught my eye. The sign was advertising "fruity ramen". I love a good bowl of ramen, and I also love unique twists on classic dishes, so I decided to try it out for dinner.

It turns out that fruity ramen is a bowl of classic pork ramen noodle soup served with slices of lime and orange as a secret ingredient to give the dish a bright citrus kick.

I placed the order, not really knowing what to expect. My meal was served just a few minutes later. The bowl of ramen looked beautiful and colorful, and was filled with, besides the citrus, grilled pork, grilled mushrooms, purple onion, seaweed, and tomatoes. The bowl of ramen also came with a three-minute hourglass. I was instructed to turn the glass over and wait three minutes before removing the fruit so that the flavors don't get too powerful.

By itself, it was a very good if standard bowl of ramen. The meat was tender, the noodles, were perfectly chewy, and the broth was rich, salty, and packed with umami flavors. However, it was, of course, the fruit that really made this bowl of ramen stand out.

It's an unusual combination, but I think it somehow worked really well. The mild citrus flavor cut through the rich broth and gave it a really pleasant taste. It's definitely more than just a gimmick, and I would absolutely come back to order ramen from this shop again. It's delicious and innovative, and everything tasted delicious.

Menu

When you sit down at the little ramen restaurant, you'll find a small paper menu in front of you. Just tick off whatever you want to order with the provided pen and hand it over to the guy working behind the counter. He'll prepare and serve your food, and you'll pay before leaving.

I ordered the restaurant's signature "Fruity and Salty Ramen" with low salt and thick classic ramen noodles. I did not add a boiled egg, but I think it would probably be really good with the dish.
