Shibuya Honey Toast

Shibuya honey toast is a popular dessert originating from Japan. It consists of thick slices of toasted sweet white bread topped with ice cream and drizzled with a delicious serving of fresh, sweet honey. The combination of crispy bread and deliciously sweet toppings creates a rich and decadent treat popular throughout Asia.

Honey toast is traditionally made with pain de mie, a type of sweet white French bread with a thin, soft crust. The bread is scut into large slices, sliced into thick cubes, and caramelized by baking them briefly in an oven with a brushing of butter and honey. The toast is then topped with a scoop of ice cream, fresh whipped cream, and a very generous cup of sweet honey.
We were exploring Udon Thani in the northeast of Thailand, and found ourselves tired, hungry, and in need of a pick-me-up. We happened upon Beyond Cafe located just outside of the Udon Thani City Museum and Chaloem Phrakiat Park.
The honey toast was absolutely delicious. It was thick, soft, buttery, and extremely sweet. The toast itself was hot, which was complemented sublimely by the cold vanilla ice cream. Of course, what makes honey toast honey toast is the rich honey drizzled on top. The cafe provided us with a generous shot glass of sweet local honey, which absolutely made the dish.
To get the most out of your dessert, be sure to get a bite of toast, ice cream, honey, and sweet whipped cream all on the same fork!
What's especially cool about Beyond Cafe is that it is also a training location for local vocational students studying business. The cafe is run by students from the local trade college.

If you're into coffee, I also recommend the espresso sunrise, a Thai-style coffee drink made of fresh-squeezed orange juice and espresso. It's my favorite drink at the moment!
