Tempura Enoki Mushrooms with Spicy Seasoning at Jodd Fairs, Bangkok, Thailand

Tempura Enoki Mushrooms

at Jodd Fairs, Bangkok, Thailand

Enoki mushrooms, long, thin, white mushrooms with a nice crunchy texture, are some of my favorite mushrooms. Enoki are popular in Asian cuisine and are often found as an element of hot pot. I really love the mild flavor and texture, and could snack on them all day.

The other day I was at Jodd Fairs, a trendy outdoor night market that just opened their second location in Bangkok on Phahonyothin Road in the Chatuchak neighborhood. I ordered a serving of fried enoki mushrooms battered in tempura and sprinkled with a spicy seasoning.

Tempura is a Japanese street food snack that is popular all throughout Asia. Interestingly, the dish was introduced to Japan by the Portuguese, who imported their fritter recipes to Japan in the 16th century! (The Japanese word "tempura" actually comes from the Latin word for the Ember Days, "quatuor tempora", a fasting period when devout Catholics go meatless in an act of penitence).

Tempura usually consists of vegetables (though you can also find meat and seafood tempura) lightly coated in a water, egg, and wheat flour batter and deep fried in oil to give it a golden crispy exterior.

I loved this snack!

The tempura was crispy on the outside and crunchy on the inside, which I thought was a really satisfying texture! It wasn't too oily, but instead was nicely fried.

You can choose what flavor you want the tempura to be. At first I asked for "original", thinking that it was a sort of house sause or spice blend, but it turned out that original just meant "plain", so instead I asked for the "hot and spicy" flavor. It turned out to be a special hot spice blend that they sprinkled over the fried mushrooms, giving them a bit of heat and a bit of a spicy kick. I really enjoyed it!

Location

Jodd Fairs currently has two locations in Bangkok. The original location is downtown in the Phra Ram 9 neighborhood. This time, I visited the second location in Bangkok's Chatuchak neighborhood (near BTS 5 Yaek Ladprao Station).

This second location, built on the site of a former theme park, is bigger than the first. There's a small pond, lots of places to sit and enjoy your food, and even a fairy tale castle to explore!
