Khao Yum, or Mixed Rice Salad

Today, I'm heading to Luang Perm Market in Bangkok, Thailand, which is more commonly called the "Thai Airways Market," because it's located behind the Thai Airways Headquarters on Vibhawadi Road.

The market itself is pretty quiet. It still hasn't really recovered from COVID, but shops are slowly returning. However, the food court is extremely popular, especially during lunchtime when Thai Airways corporate employees flock here to eat great food at good prices.

The market serves lots of amazing Thai food: noodles, rice dishes, soups, and more, many of which have won awards. However, today I'm her to eat khao yum, or mixed rice salad, a flavorful and healthy lunch dish originating in southern Thailand.

Video Review

Khao yum is a mixed salad that starts with a plate of purple rice tossed with lots of different vegetables and herbs like chopped green beans, fresh and juicy pomelo, slices of young mango, lemongrass, bean sprouts, dried shrimp, chili, roasted coconut, roasted black sesame, and many other different types of herbs.

The dressing, a special sweet sauce, is made out of simmered palm sugar with fermented fish sauce and lots of herbs like lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal.

The dish is super flavorful and complex, with spicy, sour, savory, and sweet tastes mingling together alongside the extraordinarily heterogeneous textures of all of the different mixed ingredients.

This dish tastes super fresh and light. It's also very healthy, since it's mostly made of fruit and vegetables.

Price

It cost me just 60 baht (about $2 USD) for this huge plate of food.
