Lao Khao-Soi, Luang Prabang

Khao Soi in Luang Prabang

Khao Soi is one of my all-time favorite Northern Thai dishes. Now that I see that it's also popular in Laos, I'm curious about how it tastes. Is it going be similar to Thai khao soi? Geographically Laos is near to northern Thailand, but the food, culture, and language of Laos is a lot closer to that of eastern Thailand. Let's find out!

I found a little local shop that has khao soi on the menu. It seems to be a popular dish as they were already serving customers from a big pot of khao soi soup before I sat down. A few minutes later, a bowl full of red soup was served in front of me.

It smells good! Lots of spices. Lao Khao Soi is nothing like northern Thai Khao soi, it turns out. It's a totally different dish that shares the same name, but it is enjoyable. The soup is savory and a bit spicy. Chewy rice noodles are topped with lots of tasty minced pork. The dish is served with lime and bean sprouts. I think it's pretty delicious, but I would not compare the taste with the Thai dish of the same name, as for me they are both totally different. This noodle shop also serves many other dishes made to order, and all of the food is delicious, filling, and cheap! Make sure you stop by if you are in Luang Prabang!
