The World of Fast Food: Burger King Thailand

Burger King in Thailand does not only serve Whoppers and Bacon Kings, but also offers their unique take on some more traditional Thai dishes. If you've been following this blog, you'll know that while I usually write about street food around the world, I definitely have a soft spot for the unique local takes on traditional dishes that Western fast food chains serve up around the world.

I ordered Burger King delivery for dinner the other night. This time, I decided to try out the Thai salted chicken with sticky rice and a pandan custard coconut pie for dessert.

I ordered the combo salted chicken and sticky rice set from Burger King Thailand. It came with a good-sized serving of fried salty chicken (Thai-style fried chicken cooked with salty fish sauce) and a traditionally-sized serving of sticky rice. It also came with a small cup of Thai salty and spicy fried chicken dipping sauce.

Even though it came from a fast food chain, the chicken nuggets were definitely Thai-styled. The salty servings of savory chicken were lightly coated with Burger King's typical batter, but were cooked in the Thai method, which is very lightly battered and slightly more healthy than regular American deep fried chicken.

Served with sticky rice - one is expected to take a small serving of that sticky rice to dip into the provided spicy sauce in between bites of chicken - this dish is way more "Thai" than I had expected from Burger King.

The sauce is a salty, savory, and spicy blend of Thai flavors - very similar to the sauce one would receive with an order of Thai-style Hat Yai Chicken.

I was amazed at how "Thai" this dish was! I love when foreign fast food chains can adapt to the local tastes. It's one of my favorite parts about experiencing food whilst traveling.

For dessert, I had ordered a Thai-style pandan coconut custard pie. While it may have looked like a traditional Burger King deep-fried pie, the filling is what made it unique to Thailand. Instead of being stuffed with the traditional apple pie fillings, this fried pie was instead filled with a pandan custard and coconut filling.

Pandan, the sweet tropical leaf used as a dessert ingredient throughout Southeast Asia, pairs perfectly with coconut. It's almost like a match made in heaven for these two flavors.

Pandan juice and extract is a popular flavor in Southeast Asian desserts. This sweet fruit, with a bread-like (sweet and yeasty) aroma and green color is a popular ingredient in custards and sweets in Thailand and neighboring countries. When mixed with small pieces of sweet, fresh coconut, it creates a sweet and rich custard which is perfect as a filling of a fast food deep-fried hand pie.
