Egg Roti in Bangkok, Thailand

Roti Khai, or Egg Roti

by Ranee French Butter Roti in Bangkok, Thailand

Roti khai is a type of egg pancake popular as a street food and dessert in Thailand. This dish is made from a super thin and elastic flour dough fried on a griddle until chewy and crispy.

I ordered roti khai, a type of roti coated on the inside with a beaten egg and topped with a serving of sweetened condensed milk.

Roti is a type of pastry popular in the south of Thailand. Originating in India, roti is a staple food in south and southeast Asia and is especially popular in Maritime Southeast Asia (particularly Malaysia and Indonesia).

Roti dough is pulled until paper-thin and laid out flat on a huge oil-filled wok or griddle. The dough is then stuffed full of the requested filling (I chose egg) and fried.

Roti dough is chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside. This dish can be either sweet or savory, and can come with a ton of different fillings and flavorings.

I ordered a sweet and savory roti filled with beaten egg and topped with sweetened condensed milk. It was a great snack; cheap and filling and easily available all across the country.
