Biscuits Benedict and Shrimp Grits: Southern Sunday Brunch in Waco, TX

Southern Sunday Brunch

at The Olive Branch, Waco, Texas

The Olive Branch is a cafe and restaurant located in downtown Waco, Texas that sells sandwiches, burgers, wraps, soups, salads, and other deli favorites. I stopped in for lunch recently and was surprised and delighted to learn that they have a special southern-style brunch menu that you can only get on Sunday!

I decided to try a few of their southern specialties and settled on an order of biscuits benedict and shrimp and grits.

I love breakfast food, and eggs benedict is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I especially like when it has a bit of a twist, like the tom yum eggs benedict that I had in Bangkok, Thailand.

Biscuits benedict takes the classic ham, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce from a traditional serving of eggs benedict and serves them atop delicious southern-style American biscuits. It's rich, decadent, and very filling.

The meal comes with a fresh salad though, so you can argue that it's healthy, right?

Biscuits are a staple of southern American cuisine, and for you Brits out there, they are sort of like a savory scone that is soft, buttery, and a little bit crumbly. The flavors of the eggs, ham, and sauce unsurprisingly pair perfectly with the biscuits. It's a combination that I had never thought of before, and I loved every bite.

We also tried The Olive Branch's famous shrimp and grits.

Grits are a type of savory maize porridge served for breakfast in parts of the southern United States. Shrimp and grits is a dish that originated in the Carolina Low Country, but is now popular throughout much of the southern US.

Here, the buttery grits were served with several massive shrimp, two gigantic pieces of thick and crispy bacon, and another biscuit baked with pimento peppers for a sweet and spicy southern kick.

Portions were huge, and I was glad that I didn't have to try to finish them all on my own!

The meals came with a cup of diner-style black coffee.
