Cold Zaru Soba Noodles and Tempura
by Itasoba Kaoriya Hiroshima Otemachi, Hiroshima, Japan
Hiroshima, Japan is one of the country's top food cities, and when I was in town, I wanted to have a plate of zaru soba, one of my favorite Japanese dishes for lunch. After spending half a day at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, I took a walk along the river and into a local neighborhood to eat at Itasoba Kaoriya Hiroshima Otemachi where I ordered a soba noodle lunch set.

The noodles at this restaurant were super thick with a wonderful chewy texture. I don't think I've ever had such wide soba noodles before!
The noodles aren't eaten like soup as other types of Japanese noodles typically are. To eat soba, you pick up a few of the noodles with your chopsticks and dip them into the chilled broth, which is served with slices of onion and wasabi on the side so that you can prepare each bite as you like. Soba is nothing fancy, but it's a hearty, delicious, and filling meal that I've always enjoyed.
The soba set was served with a side of tempura: shrimp and a variety of root vegetables lightly coated in a savory batter and deep fried.
Itasoba Kaoriya Hiroshima Otemachi is located at Japan, 〒730-0051 Hiroshima, Naka Ward, Otemachi, 2 Chome−7−27 NKビル 1階. The restaurant is just a short walk from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the somber, informative, and very well-done Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, dedicated to the atomic bombing of the city on 6 August 1945 and its aftermath. The museum is moving and emotionally heavy, but I think that it's very important to visit when you are in Hiroshima.
