Braised Pork Rice Bowl and Mixed Fish Ball Soup
by Zhang Ji Traditional Fishballs, Jiufen, Taiwan
Braised pork is one of the most popular foods in Taiwan, and while Zhang Ji Traditional Fish Balls (九份張記傳統魚丸) is, of course, famous for their fish balls, they also sell an incredible bowl of braised pork on rice. The beloved restaurant is located along the Old Street in Jiufen, Taiwan north of Taipei, and is a great place for a solid lunch of Taiwanese comfort food.

This shop has been serving up their legendary handmade fish balls since 1946 and is as popular as ever. They sell four different types of fish balls:
- traditional springy fish balls made from a plain fish paste
- "Fuzhou" fish balls stuffed with a juicy pork filling
- cuttlefish balls with a rich seafood flavor
- and mushroom and pork balls
You can order any type of fish ball, but I recommend ordering the mixed ball soup (綜合魚丸湯), which comes with one of each type of fish ball served in a light savory broth with a bit of celery and green onion. Every fish ball has its own unique taste and texture, and this way, you'll have the chance to sample each one.

The fish balls were excellent, but they are more of a "small eat" than a full meal. For my lunch, I also ordered their recommended braised pork rice bowl.
Each bowl of rice was topped with stewed cabbage, five spice-boiled eggs, boiled bamboo, a piece of marinated tofu, and a huge slab of juicy, tender and sweet soft-braised pork belly.
The restaurant serves a variety of traditional Taiwanese dishes. Although most famous for their fish balls, they are also known for their delicious braised pork and dry noodles. Order and pay first, then take a seat. Your food will be delivered to your table shortly.
