Nasi Lemak, Kaya Toast, Half-Boiled Egg Toast, and Iced Coffee
Malaysian Breakfast by Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
It's true... breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, especially when traveling. Or, at the very least, it's the best meal of the day and my personal favorite meal of the day! I am a massive breakfast fan, and I always like to start my days of adventure with a great meal and coffee wherever I am in the world.
The other day, I was visiting Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and stopped in at Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam for a classic Malaysian breakfast featuring the country's delicious national dish, nasi lemak.

Nasi lemak with chicken is a traditional dish known for its complex flavors and textures. It features fragrant coconut rice, often cooked with pandan leaves for added aroma.
Accompanying the dish are condiments such as sambal (a salty, savory, and spicy chili paste), hard-boiled egg, roasted peanuts, crispy fried anchovies, and cucumber slices. This combination when all mixed together creates a delicious blend of savory, spicy, and sweet flavors. It's great at any time of the day, but I especially like it for breakfast.

Another staple at a Malaysian kopitiam is kaya toast. Kaya is a type off local coconut jam, and it's typically served in a sort of sandwich on lightly toasted bread with thin slices of cold butter. It's especially good when dunked into a cup of hot Ipoh-style white coffee.

Location
Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam is located at 1, Jalan Balai Polis, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. What started in 1956 as a simple street food stall has grown into one of KL's most beloved breakfast spots and now occupies a multi-floor historic building with old school shophouse vibes. It can get busy during the breakfast rush, but with plenty of seating over two floors, you shouldn't have to wait too long to get a seat.
