Khao Tom, or Thai Congee Breakfast Set

Sometimes simple is best, and you can't get much simpler than a bowl of hearty congee, or rice porridge for breakfast. This popular Asian breakfast staple is one of my favorites, but it can come in many different forms. The other day I ordered a set of khao tom, a type Thai of rice porridge with grains that remain loose and brothy rather than thick and creamy and lightly flavored with a fragrant pandan leaf.

The khao tom set came with three sides to be eaten with the otherwise plain porridge. I could select from a list, and decided to order an omelette, stir-fried morning glory with oyster sauce and garlic, and a yum, or spicy mixed salad, made with sweet Chinese pork sausage.

Each of the sides added a different flavor and texture to each bite of porridge. Like I said, the dish is simple, but it's filling and delicious, and is one of the best ways of starting the day in my opinion.

Location

Thitaree Restaurant is located at ซอย สวนรถไฟ, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900 on the northwestern edge of Wachirabenjatas Park (better known as Rot Fai Park). The park is close to MRT Chatuchak Park and BTS Mo Chit stations, but I recommend taking a taxi from the station to the restaurant, otherwise you'll be faced with a long walk along the busy street. Of course, if you are already inside the park, you can enjoy a nice walk through the beautiful shady park to the restaurant.
