Bún Thịt Nướng, or Grilled Pork and Noodles

Bún Thịt Nướng is a southern Vietnamese dish similar to, but distinct from, northern Vietnam's iconic bún chả. The dish is a hearty, healthy, and filling meal typically eaten for lunch or dinner.

Bun cha, a pork and noodle dish popular in Hanoi and the north of Vietnam, is probably my very favorite traditional Vietnamese food. It's almost always the first dish I seek out whenever I'm traveling in northern Vietnam. When I was visiting Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon), I wanted to try out bun cha's southern counterpart.

Bún Thịt Nướng (which literally means "rice noodles with grilled meat"), consists of a bowl of cold vermicelli noodles topped with slices of marinaded and grilled pork. The bowl is also filled with fresh vegetables and herbs such as bean sprouts, lettuce, mint, and basil. It's topped with crushed roasted peanuts and fried shallots, which add a bit of a crunchy texture and a more complex flavor to the dish.

The bowl of bun thit nuong was also served with a side of sauce made from fish sauce, sugar, pickled sliced carrots, and pickled radishes which you could dip the noodles and meat into to add extra flavor before eating.
Expect dishes to cost around 60,000 VND (about 3 USD). The menu is written in both Vietnamese and English, making the restaurant very accessible even to visitors who cannot speak or read Vietnamese.

Location

The restaurant is located at 89 Đ. Nguyễn Du, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam. It's in District 1, very close to Independence Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral.
