Somtum Der is a Michelin award-winning Issan (northeastern Thai) restaurant that first earned its star in 2016. The original branch is located in Bangkok's Sala Daeng neighborhood with a second branch at Tha Tian in the city's old town, which is where I tried it for the first time.Somtum Der now has branches in Tokyo, Taipei, and even New York City. With such great success and global popularity, I knew that the food had to be good, so one afternoon after a nice walk in old town, I stopped in for lunch.
Somtum, or papaya salad, is a dish from northeastern Thailand's Issan region consisting of green papaya mixed with ingredients such as lime juice, fish sauce, and garlic. It's a fresh, spicy, sour dish that is typically enjoyed with sticky rice.

At Somtum Der, I ordered the "tum kor moo tod mama", or deep-fried pork neck with spicy papaya salad and instant noodles for 260 baht. The dish consisted of a plate of somtum, which was made in front of me in a large mortar and pestle as I sat at the bar of the restaurant in front of the kitchen. The papaya salad was mixed with "Mama" (instant noodles, called as such after the most popular brand in Thailand) and was topped with a huge portion of juicy fried pork neck and crispy fried garlic.
I also ordered a side of khao pod tod, or fried corn for 120 baht. A handful of Thai sweet corn kernels were battered and deep fried and served with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce.
Location
Somtum Der is located at 107, Soi Tha Suphan, Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200 in Bangkok's old town neighborhood near many of the main attractions such as Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. The restaurant can be found down a small alleyway with an excellent view across the water to Wat Arun.
