Chinese-Malay Lala Noodles with Yellow Wine, Ginger, and Clam Broth
by Lai Fong Lala Noodles, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Malaysia is a great destination for a foodie due to its rich cultural and culinary diversity. On a recent visit to Kuala Lumpur, the county's capital city, I wanted to try as much as I could. For my first dinner in KL, I decided to trust the Michelin guide. I was in the mood for Malay-Chinese food, so I headed over to Petaling Street for a meal at Lai Fong Lala Noodles.
Lala noodles are a popular Malaysian seafood dish made with fresh clams, known locally as "lala" served in a light, flavorful broth with noodles. The soup is typically made from Chinese yellow rice wine, ginger, garlic, and chili and has a balanced savory, spicy, and mildly sweet flavor.

This Michelin Bib Gourmand award-winning restaurant started out as a simple street food stall but has grown over the past decade and now occupies a multi-floor shophouse restaurant. It's become very popular not only with tourists but also with locals who come for the delicious and uniquely aromatic broth (I've never tasted anything quite like the sweet wine and ginger soup) and gigantic portions.
