Laotian Red Pork, Vientiane

Moo Daeng, or Laotian Red Pork

by City Photocopy and Restaurant, Vientiane, Laos

The unassuming City Photocopy and Restaurant may seem like an odd combination - it's a place in Vientiane, Laos where you can get passport photos taken, make photocopies, receive help with visa applications, and order some tasty Laotian street food all at the same time!

I ordered a hearty plate of khao moo daeng, red pork on rice. It's a popular dish in Thailand and a delicious part of Laotian cuisine as well!

Whenever I'm in Vientiane, I always make it a point to eat here. There's something that I find just fun and odd about eating a filling Laotian meal inside a photocopy shop!

Last time I was in Laos, I stopped by with a craving for Laotian-style barbecue pork on rice. The pork was lean and tasty, with a nice smoky flavor. It was served in thin slices over a big scoop of rice and smothered in a sweet and savory Lao-style barbecue sauce. The best part was that the whole dish cost only $1!

Travel Tips

There's a ton to do in the small and sleepy Laotian capital, but one of my very favorite things to do in Vientiane is to visit and tour the Beer Lao Brewery! Beer Lao is the national beer of Laos, and is often cited as the best beer in Southeast Asia. The brewery is a little ways out of town, but you can get there via tuk-tuk or public city bus in about 10-15 minutes. There is a small museum about the history of Laos' famous beer, but the best part of the visit is the "minibar", a small tasting room where you can sample each of Beer Lao's specialty beers.

Beer Lao's original flavor is a very solid and crisp lager, but my personal favorite is Beer Lao Dark. Beer Lao Gold is the premium version which is made with wheat and Laotian rice, and is generally only available in Laos.

Recently, the brewery has released a trio of brand-new beer flavors aimed at reaching a wider international audience. Of the three new flavors, my favorite was Beer Lao Hoppy!
