Patongo and Soy Milk for Breakfast

by Nam Dao Huu, Bangkok, Thailand

If you are in Bangkok's busy Chinatown, don't miss a classic breakfast of patongo and fresh soy milk - the quintessential early morning pairing. Nam Dao Huu, a Thai-Chinese café, is one of the best places for a fresh and delicious breakfast in Chinatown.

Patongo is made fresh every morning, and served hot and oily right out of the fryer!

Traditionally, patongo is served with a cup of hot soy milk. However, nowadays in Bangkok, people like to start their day with cold, iced drinks. Thai iced tea is especially famous, as is Thai iced coffee. Iced soy milk is no exception to this! Nam Dao Huu does serve the traditional hot soy milk (15 THB), of course, but their specialty is their delicious, slightly sweet soy milk blended with ice into a frappe-like consistency (45 THB).

Another specialty is tang yuan, a Chinese dish of sesame paste inside glutenous rice balls served in a bowl of sweetened soy milk.

The café is a cheap and authentic (not to mention trendy and clean) spot to sit down and eat in the middle of Bangkok's busy Chinatown, and worth making a trip out to visit.
