Bad Poutine has been making waves in Bangkok. This tiny hole-in-the-wall snack shack serves up delicious portions of the Québécois national dish topped with generous portions of meat (totally non-traditional, hence the restaurant's tongue-in-cheek name).

I made my way across the city to Songwat Road in Bangkok's bustling Chinatown to try this funky fusion take on a Canadian classic.

Poutine is a popular French-Canadian dish, originally from Quebec, made with three basic ingredients: French fries (chips), cheese curds, and gravy. The French fries are thick-cut and fried until crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cheese curds, which are soft, fresh, and slightly chewy to the bite, are sprinkled on top of the hot fries. The dish is then generously covered with a warm, rich gravy, typically made from a mix of meat stock, flour, and seasonings, which helps melt the cheese curds slightly and binds all the components together.

A bit obscure outside of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, poutine seems like an unlikely dish to find a home in Bangkok, Thailand. And yet, Bad Poutine seems to always be popular.

I stepped up to the small window to place my order, and after paying, the staff dragged two camp chairs and an upside-down crate out into the nearby alley as a makeshift table.

There's certainly nothing fancy about Bad Poutine, but I think that's part of the charm.

Bad Poutine is the brainchild of Kasemparn “Fame” Jujindalert and Suparkorn “Pixie” Tipsumonta who wanted to blend the traditional Canadian poutine restaurant with the bodega-style meat shops of New York City and create a Thai take on the result. The outcome is a fusion dish that goes heavy on the meat while staying true to the heart and soul of a good bowl of poutine.

Pastrami Poutine

I first ordered Bad Poutine's signature dish: pastrami poutine.

The pastrami is smoked in-house for ten hours and is thinly sliced and layered across a bed of cheese and gravy-smothered fries.

The pastrami brisket is delicate, smoky, and peppery. It adds a wonderful meatiness and pepperiness to the heaviness of the chips and gravy.

The dish is topped with thin-cut chives for additional herbal brightness.

I cannot emphasize enough how incredible this dish was! It was ridiculously rich and filling, and each flavor melded so wonderfully together in order to create a perfect medley of starch, meat, and fat. It's not healthy, of course, but nobody would ever think to eat poutine in order to lose weight!

Buttermilk Chicken Poutine

I also tried the buttermilk chicken poutine, another of Bad Poutine's most popular dishes.

The poutine base is topped with bite-sized nuggets of chicken battered in buttermilk and fried until crispy.

The salty little bites of chicken were really good! However, I think that the pastrami poutine was my favorite, and if you are coming here to order just one dish, you really ought to order this shop's signature.
The menu is simple! You can order a serving of poutine with buttermilk chicken (150 baht), bacon (180 baht), pulled pork (180 baht), fried fish (180 baht), rib-eye steak (250 baht), or pastrami (250 baht).

Every serving comes with a generous portion of hand-cut chips (thick-cut French fries) smothered in gravy and topped with cheese curds.

Everything sounded delicious, but I went for Bad Poutine's signature poutine with pastrami. The pastrami brisket is smoked for 10 hours in-house and is absolutely phenomenal. The buttermilk chicken poutine was fantastic as well.

Bottles of water, various sodas, and ice-cold beer are available as well.

Location

Bad Poutine is located in Bangkok, Thailand's Chinatown on Songwat Road. It's a tiny shop (sort of a Canadian-style "snack shack") tucked away in an old shophouse alley. You can find Bad Poutine at 1338B Song Wat Rd, Chakkrawat, Samphanthawong, Bangkok 10100.

The nearest metro station is MRT Wat Mangkorn. It's about a ten-minute walk from the station to the restaurant, and I recommend taking the MRT because the streets are so narrow around this part of town that it's really hard for a taxi driver to navigate.
