Thai "Es-Yen" Coffee and "Cretzel"
at Roots at Ari, Bangkok, Thailand
You've heard of cronuts and crookies, but now it's time to try a cretzel, a sweet croissant-soft pretzel fusion. I visited Roots, a popular cafe in Bangkok's Ari neighborhood to have a cretzel and a glass of "es-yen", a popular type of Thai iced coffee.

In recent years, es-yen has been recognized as a uniquely Thai coffee drink. And let me tell you, in a country as hot and humid as Thailand, people have really come to be crazy for iced coffee!
But I wasn't just here for the coffee, but also to try the cretzel, which was exactly what it sounded like. A soft roll of flaky croissant dough was twisted into the shape of a large soft pretzel, glazed in a sweet, buttery topping, topped with slivers of toasted almonds, and baked to be crispy on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. It was very sweet, and normally I prefer salty pretzels, but the light croissant texture went really nicely with the sweet toppings. It wasn't anything crazy, but it was tasty, innovative, and nice to have alongside a glass of es-yen coffee.
