Lately, Abang Halal Food's signature Indonesian spicy green chili fried chicken has been blowing up social media here in Bangkok.

This little Indonesian restaurant down a small alleyway near BTS Ratchathewi Station has gone viral for its super spicy green chili fried chicken.

The chicken is cooked in the Indonesian style, first marinated and simmered with a mixture of herbs and spices before being deep-fried in hot oil. This traditional preparation, known as ungkep, allows the flavors of the ingredients such as turmeric, garlic, coriander, galangal, lemongrass, and aromatic leaves to penetrate the meat before the chicken is fried until crisp. The chili sambal that gives this dish its iconic spicy flavor is made from an enormous quantity of green chilies which are roughly crushed together with aromatics, producing a fresh and intensely spicy topping for the crispy chicken thigh.

The standard way the chicken is served is completely coated in a mountain of the green chili paste. However, be warned, the paste is made from literally hundreds of mashed-up green chilis and is extremely spicy. The restaurant also offers the option of serving the chili paste in a cup on the side, allowing you to control just how hot you want your chicken. Unless you have a tongue of steel and plenty of experience eating very spicy food, I'd recommend that even adventurous eaters order the chili on the side.

I like spicy food, but even I could only handle a moderate serving of the green chili!
